Keeping Your Dog Safe on Walks: Summer Safety Tips for Shoreline Pets

Summer is a great time for getting outdoors, but it also brings heat-related risks for dogs. Whether you're walking your dog yourself or using a professional service like Rex & Roxy Pet Care, it’s important to take a thoughtful approach to warm-weather routines. Here’s what you should know.
Stick to Cooler Times When Possible
Early morning or evening walks are best during hot months. Pavement and sidewalks retain heat throughout the day and can burn your dog’s paws. A quick test: place the back of your hand on the pavement for 7 seconds. If the pavement is uncomfortable then it’s likely too hot for your dog. At Rex & Roxy, we are happy to schedule walks for earlier in the day or stay close to home and play in the backyard or inside with your pup.
Stay on Shaded, Grassy Routes
Whenever possible, choose walking routes that offer shade and grass. Parks are also a great option, especially those with good tree cover and unpaved trails that are easier on your dog’s paws. Look for options that offer shade, especially for senior dogs or those with thicker coats.
Keep Walks Short and Breaks Frequent
Even active dogs can overheat in the summer. Keep walks shorter and at a slower pace, or take more breaks along the route. Watch for signs of overheating, like lagging behind, excessive panting, and a fast heart rate.
What to Bring With You
Always carry water and a collapsible bowl if possible. Offer small amounts of water throughout the walk, not just at the end. Some dogs don’t ask for water when they need it, so it is important to take breaks and give them a chance to take a drink. Cooling accessories like lightweight vests or bandanas can help, but avoid anything too heavy or poorly ventilated. Booties are also a great option to help protect your dog’s paw pads from hot pavement.
When It’s Too Hot to Walk
If it’s too hot out, it’s okay to skip the outdoor walk. Try indoor enrichment like hide-and-seek, puzzle feeders, or frozen treat toys. Mental stimulation can be just as beneficial as physical exercise when it’s too hot to be outside.
How Rex & Roxy Keeps Dogs Safe
We understand that walking during cooler hours is not always an option, and we know how important it is to keep your dog’s routine stable. That’s why at Rex & Roxy, we take extra precautions to keep them safe and happy. Here’s how:
Modified Routes: We keep to shaded, grassy, or trail routes as much as possible.
Weather Checks: We monitor temperatures and test the pavement with the back of our hands before any walk over 85°F.
Paw Pad Safety: We use client provided booties when available.
Shortened Duration: If it's too hot for a full walk, we shorten the outing and limit strenuous activities with indoor play.
Indoor Alternatives: For extreme heat, we can play in the backyard or indoors.
Water Breaks: We provide fresh water during and/or after our walks.
Monitoring: We keep a close eye on your pet for any signs of stress related to the heat.
Our team prioritizes your pet’s comfort and safety in every decision, so you can feel confident your dog is in good hands no matter the weather.
